Elections in Massachusetts

Elections occur in Massachusetts every year. Presidential terms are for four years, U.S. Senators are elected for six years and US Representatives are elected for two years along with 1/3 of the total Senate members.

The Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of the Commonwealth, Attorney General, Treasurer, and Auditor have four year terms.

In Waltham, City Councilors are elected to two year terms, and the Mayor and School Committee members serve four year terms. The terms of office for School Committee Members are staggered, with three Members elected every other year.

Register to Vote

In Massachusetts you may submit an application to register or pre-register to vote if:

  • You are a citizen of the United States; and
  • You are 16 years old; and
  • You are not currently incarcerated by reason of a felony conviction.

The City of Waltham is divided into nine Wards, each of which have two precincts. Precints in a Ward may have the same or different voting locations.
